Licensing

Copyright (c) 2026 MyLaserTools. All rights reserved except as granted below.

KerfScript is dual licensed. You can use it under either:

  1. The GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 only (AGPL-3.0-only, full text in LICENSE), together with the additional permission below, or
  2. A commercial licence from MyLaserTools.

What the AGPL means for you

Free, under the AGPL, when you:

You need a commercial licence when you:

The AGPL treats letting people use the software over a network like distributing it: if you modify KerfScript or build it into a service that others use, you must offer those users the complete corresponding source code of the whole program under the AGPL.

Additional permission: your designs are yours

As an additional permission under section 7 of the AGPL, MyLaserTools grants that:

  1. KerfScript programs you write (.kerf files), including programs that use or include the KerfScript standard library in lib/, are not considered a work based on KerfScript, and you may license and sell them on any terms you choose.
  2. Files that KerfScript produces from your programs (SVG, DXF, JSON and others) belong to you and are not covered by the AGPL.

This permission covers your programs and their output only. It does not cover the KerfScript interpreter, its tools, or modified copies of the standard library, which remain under the AGPL.

Commercial licences

A commercial licence replaces the AGPL obligations with ordinary commercial terms: closed source use, use in hosted services, private modifications and support options. Terms and pricing are set per agreement.

Trademarks

"KerfScript" and the KerfScript logo are trademarks of MyLaserTools and are not licensed by the AGPL or by the commercial licence unless that licence says so. See TRADEMARKS.md.

Contributions

MyLaserTools accepts contributions under the Contributor License Agreement, which lets MyLaserTools keep offering KerfScript under both licences.

Trademark policy

"KerfScript", the .kerf file format name used as a product name, and the KerfScript logo are trademarks of MyLaserTools. The software licences (AGPL-3.0-only and commercial) cover the code. They do not grant rights to the name or logo.

This policy keeps "KerfScript" meaning one well defined language, so a .kerf file written for one KerfScript tool works in every tool that uses the name.
