About KerfScript

KerfScript is a small programming language for laser cutting. You describe flat parts in code, and it writes an SVG or DXF file with cut, score and engrave layers, compensated for the width of the beam and laid out on your sheet. Its syntax follows OpenSCAD, so people who already write parametric models can read it straight away.

Who makes it

KerfScript is designed and maintained by MyLaserTools, a website of design tools for laser cutting and 3D printing. It started in 2026 because the generators on MyLaserTools needed a language that understood layers, kerf and joinery instead of solids. The same interpreter runs the generators on MyLaserTools, this site's playground, and the kerf command.

How mature it is

This is KerfScript 0.2.0, language version 0.1. It is young. The language may still change before 1.0, and the versions page explains what we promise to keep working in the meantime. The laser software page lists what has been checked in which programs and what has not been tested yet.

Source and licence

The interpreter is free software under the GNU AGPL 3.0, with an extra permission that makes your designs and the files they produce yours. Commercial licences are available for closed products. Licence details.

The source repository and the npm package open with the first public release. Until then the playground on this site runs the current version.

Reporting a problem

If a file does not cut the way the code says, we want to know. Send the .kerf file, the program you opened the output in, and what went wrong to julia@mylasertools.com. Security problems go to the same address; please do not post them in public.
